Hot Style

This is one of my most difficult and exciting styles to date. I see styles like these on websites all the time and wish I could do them. I finally got the guts to attempt (I hate to fail so I avoided for a long time). Now it's not perfect yet but I don't think I did too badly. I got a lot of compliments on the style.

(click on the image for a larger view)

On a sad note, my hair is becoming very messy and fuzzy because I'm not sleeping with my satin scarf. I still have many other styles I can try regardless but these baby twists aren't coming out until next week. Maybe I'll rock a twist-out for a bit before braiding up in kinky twists. We'll see. Until next post, keep keeping it kinky and Happy Holidays.

Twisted Knot-out!

In continuing my 100-Day Challenge, I'm doing a new style on my natural twists. This is a bhantu knot-out or as we say in Jamaica, Chiney Bump-out. This was my hairstyle for Boxing Day.

Styled Kinky Twists

Well as you can tell, my all-natural twists held up pretty well after the wash. I just flat-twisted one side and did a kind of circular french roll. Hard to explain but hopefully the video helps. This was done on day 10 of my 100-Day Hair Challenge.

Hot Style

This frohawk from SepiaAngel on Fotki is rockin. OK fine, I don't really talk like that but it is pretty rad.

Holiday Hair

(click on the image for a larger view)
Happy Holidays everyone. We know that we're in a festive season. I saw this hairstyle on Fotki and just had to ask No-longer-I-but-Him from Fotki for permission to post her pics on my blog. She has a cute teeny weeny Afro that she styled and added a rose that really gives it a festive touch. She pinned up the sides then added the flower. Big twists or a nice twist out would be great to produce a textured hairstyle. Remember that you don't need to have an artificial flower. Go for a quick walk and pick the nicest red flower you can find. Keep it natural. That's what this blog is all about.

Bob Pompadour Tutorial

Hey. This is BlackOnyx77 from youtube who inspired me to go 100 days with my challenge. She did this Bob Pompadour style I thought was cute. I'll be using this video for inspiration in a week so stay tuned. For today/tonight I'm doing a different style. You'll all see it soon. Remember to subscribe and keep keeping it kinky!

So I'm on to day 8 of my challenge and it's time to go swimming which means I'll need to wash my hair. This video shows you what I did with the twists to keep them from unraveling while swimming and I'll do another video or blog post to show you how my hair turned out after the first wash.

I'm now on day 6 of my challenge. I've started styling my twists. They still look good down but I wanted them out of my face. So the pic in this post is the result. My hair is itching a bit though. I guess I'll soon have to tackle the washing issue; especially since I'm going swimming soon.

My 100-Day Hair Challenge

Hey Everybody! I started a 100-Day Hair Challenge on December 17 2008. It will end on March 27, 2009.

My hair is currently in really small twists done on my natural hair with nothing added. You can click on the picture for a larger view. I'm so happy with the length I've achieved in the past year. This is about two years of new growth. Think I can double this length in another two years? Anyway, on to my hair challenge. This was inspired by Black Onyx on Fotki/Youtube. My rules are a little different though.

Hair Challenge Commandments
  1. Thou shalt not comb or brush thy hair more than once a week. (combing is not the same as styling.)
  2. Thou shalt keep thy hair in protective styles at all times.(Protective styles are styles that require no combing and/or do not touch your neck. I'll talk more about this in a future post.)
  3. Thou shalt not use heat on thy hair.
  4. Thou shalt not dye thy hair.
  5. Thou shalt deep condition thy hair regularly.
  6. Thou shalt moisturize everyday.
  7. Thou shalt spray Leave-in on ends once per week. (I advise doing this after a wash)
  8. Thou shalt cover thy hair with a satin scarf every night to keep the moisture locked in.
  9. Thou shalt eat as healthily as possible and drink 8 glasses of water per day.
  10. Thou shalt love thy hair enough to take the time out to keep it healthy and beautiful.
Why am I doing this?
Well for one, I don't want to have to untangle my hair all the time. For two, well, see one. I guess it would be nice to get a lot more length from it as a bonus. I'm heading back to the US soon and I really want to protect my hair from the cold. I decided I'm not ready for locs yet so I'm just trying to stay out of my hair as much as possible while keeping it healthy (and kinky).

Will You Join Me??
I'd love some company. Let me know if you're interested in joining my challenge - even if just for a little while. I'd love to see how you all do too.

Another Curly Fro Tutorial

Greetings from Jamaica

Hi Everyone. I'm home visiting relatives for the holidays so no more daily posting for a while. I'm taking a much-needed break but it won't affect the number of posts too badly. Maybe two or three times a week. I just need some "me" time to be free - lol - hence my hair in the pic looking like a butterfly about to take flight... get it? OK whatever. hehehe.

I'll show a proper pic of my hair later this week but please enjoy the multiple posts that are here for the weekend and remember to leave comments about what you liked or what was helpful. Questions are welcome too although I'm no professional, I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

Hot Holiday Style

Zhara from Fotki did this extremely chic style. It's not a style I've ever imagined doing. It looks so good on her I wonder if I could pull it off but I'm sure some of you could. As usual I'll let you all know when I try it. Please let me know if you do too.

Exam Style

So my exams just ended a few days ago. I got really lazy with my hair. I found a style on Youtube that was ridiculously easy and did a variation. I rarely do the exact styles. I make them my own so I hope you guys are making the styles on this blog your own too. I had my flat-ironed hair (that was reverting) in four plaits that night and had a very loose wave from taking out the plaits. I secured the top half and put my stylish clip on top. It was really simple but has this effortless look that I LOVE. I hope this inspired somebody to do some simple styles on stretched or flat-ironed hair. Oh. I added a bandoo because I was rushing and had one weird lump in the front. lol. Anyway - it worked out great for me. Hope someone likes it enough to try it.

EbonyPrincessH from Fotki did this really modern style. It's very fresh and is definitely not for the timid but isn't too unique for everyday life.

Transitioning Styles

CharHar from Fotki has had several of her styles featured before. Here she is with a bunch of styles she's done while she was transitioning. I hope you transitioners out there are inspired.

Falling in Love

Hi all,

This video made me fall in love with my curly hair all over again. I've been trying to figure out what to do with it. I've been considering locks but not I think I haven't exhausted my curly-haired options enough. For now - I'm thinking that I'll just have too many loose styles to try in Jamaica. We'll see. My mind changes faster than the weather when it comes to hair so we'll see. I think the loose styles will start next weekend or so after I start going to the pool a lot. I'll have to be washing often so I'll probably have a lot of updos to post or wash and go variations.

1040's Pin-up Inspiration

This video post may be the biggest departure from the norm for me. I've always loved 40's pin-up styles. I'm thinking of trying a variation of this style soon. Should be interesting. hehehe. Maybe I'll do it for tomorrow on semi-straight hair but I'll definitely attempt it in the next two days. I guess this can been done on longer natural hair or blow-dried/flat-ironed hair. I not have flat-ironed hair that is reverting to curly. Now I'm even curious about it on box braids. Well I guess time will tell if I can even do this style. I'll post the results whether good or bad.

Hot Style

This could be another great Christmas Party style ! Will you try it? Thanks again to Pretty Dimples from Fotki for a great style.

Hairzing Style

My flat ironed hair is slowly reverting. I'm surprised it's lasting this long, but no complaints. I clipped the top half of my hair then wrapped all the hair, including the top ponytail, into a loose french roll then secured the Hairzing on top. Loved it. Wasn't too tight.

Sorry about the face. I have a terrible cold. Anyway, hope this post inspires someone to buy a zing and try some new styles.

Zining in the New Year

I'm gonna be "zinging" in the new year in style. LoL. I finally got my Hairzings in the mail! Here is what they look like. The first time I saw them, they were on twisted/loose nappy hair. I'll be using them on my flat ironed hair for the next week or so but I'll definintely be trying it again when my kinks come back. I'm so excited. I'm hoping that they'll add some sophistication to my everyday twists. I anticipate using them a lot when I need a professional look.

How to Blow-Dry Natural Hair

I found this one quickly so this is for you Anya. I thought it would have taken longer. This is almost exactly how I blow-dry my hair. I thought this video was so cute and the little girl has beautiful hair. I heard the her say "ouch". She's so adorable though and played in her hair the entire time. Enjoy learning how to blow-dry your hair. By the way - the comb attachment on the dryer is a MUST for a successful blow-dry. Keep it Kinky now.

PinCurls for DeDe

Hi Everyone. This post is in response to Dede.

Dede Asked: Hi one of your subs here. Any style tips on doing the curl? Do you think it would be too hard to do on non-flat ironed hair?

KiK's Response: Pin Curls are really easy. I think they are best done on blow-dried, twisted, plaited or flat-ironed hair but this all depends on your hair texture. The video below shows how it's done. Please ignore the flat-ironing tip. It's really unnecessary and only adds extra heat damage to your style. A tip you can use is to put the hair around a roller (or something cylindrical if you have no rollers) and use that to form the circular curl. Enjoy trying your pin curl. I hope you get good results.

How To: Clean a Hairbrush

Hot Style - Pin Curl

I did my first pin-curl style. I love it. I'll definitely be doing it on blow-dried hair or twisted hair. I Had a simple bun in the back. It was fun and the pics really don't do the style justice. You can do this with twists and plaits too.
(Remember you can always click on the image for a larger/clearer view.)

Party Hair - Flat Ironed

Well this is a side bun that was done on flat-ironed hair. I find that sometimes I think style means complicated. Sometimes all you need is simple and sleek and if I may say so, sophisticated. (I really hope my curl pattern returns after this extreme flat-iron :).

The Mega Bun - Nappy Style

Guess What!

No, it's not an old picture. I took this pic tonight (Friday Dec. 5, 2008) and no I haven't permanently straightened my hair. I only flat-ironed with my maxiglide.

But let me admit, I've wanted long natural hair for a long time. I'm finally getting there. My hair is almost arm-pit length when stretched but it's also terribly difficult to untangle. I wash and throughly untangle my hair then put it in plaits but it is always VERY tangled when I loosen the plaits in the morning. Even when I plait my hair nightly they are tangled in the morning. It's really stressing me out and taking up wayy too much of my time. I'm even afraid of doing puff because of the untangling that would follow.

Clearly I don't know how to plait properly since nobody I've met so far can relate to my tangled experience. As a result, I'm now seriously considering locks. I'm THINKING about getting my hair plaited to start in another few weeks then interlocking like the video below afterwards. If I make it to month 6 and still like the locks I'll keep them, if not - I'll attempt to loosen the plaits.

Advice?
Suggestions?

New Style

Sorry I don't have better pics. I did a random flat twist in the front. It had a very retro look that I liked. In the back I have two rows of individual twists. My hair overall was in a ponytail. I twisted the ponytail in about 4 and pinned it to the base of the ponytail with hairpins. So I had a lot going on. Experimentation I guess. Try it if you like it and Keep it Kinky.

Color Crazy

I've been trying to save money on stuff I don't need but I saw someone's nail polish album and because green with color envy. I bought this from Walmart for about 1:75. I'm really enjoying my new blue color. I also bought a pinky purple. I'll be combining the two sometime soon.

I did it...

and liked it. I only did seven sloppy flat twists. I also put curlers on the end to prevent them from unraveling. I got lots of compliments and TONS of stares - the good kind of stares. UNfortunately I got a horrible migraine attack and left work to roll in bed, crying in pain and trying to fall asleep (and not puke - i have the worse migraines). The end result - my style is all messed up. I doubt it will last till tomorrow.
(Click on the images for larger views)

I had an exam at school later in the day and so I put a hair comb in to push back the side that was slept on.This pic has such a fake smile. I felt like crap but liked the style a lot. Anyway, here is what it turned out to be...

Hopefully I'll be able to figure out what to do with it tomorrow. Check back soon to see what happens. Until then, Keep It Kinky.

Makeup Essentials

Hey Ladies. I've taken to makeup quite a bit lately. I don't wear it all the time but I've been doing some research so that I can step up my game face. Here are some essentials when it comes to makeup application.

Must-haves
1 large mirror
Liquid Foundation Sponges

Brushes
Powder brush
Eyeshadow brushes
Blush brush

Extras
Tissue to wipe away mistakes quickly
Petroleum Jelly as mascara replacement
Cotton Pads for blotting things like oil and extra product.
Makeup Remover

I've been criticized...

...a lot.

I've been criticized for blow-drying my hair. I've ebeen told I'm accepting the euro-centric norms and that I haven't accepted my natural hair texture. WHATEVER. For my critics' information - not all Caucasians have bone straight hair and even some of those that do still blow-dry and flatiron their hair. It's a styling option. The last time I plaited my hair in seven after washing and towel drying, it took TWO DAYS to dry. When I was relaxed it took a long time too. I blow-dry because it's fast. I also blow-dry my hair to dry it without tangles. The plaits tend to have tangles too even though I throroughly untangle with my denman. I think something is wrong with my plaiting method. LOL. Anyway, I mostly straighten my hair when I don't have the time to untangle my hair in order to style it everyday. Sometimes I just feel like having a different style. I love my hair... in many styles.

If you enjoy your hair curly and never straightened - good for you. If you want to wear it flat-ironed all the time - good for you (and be careful not to damage your hair). Do what works for you and I'll do what works for me. The main reason I stopped putting a permanent relaxer in my hair is that I believed the chemicals are harmful.

Unfortunately I'm not trying to make some kind of statement. I'm just doing me. I happen to like my natural texture more though and wish more people would explore the natural hair option. It can be quite difficult to transition but I definitely encourage everyone I know to try it. Anyway, until next time when I come through with new styles...

New Style

I still have two rows of twists at the back of my hair. I wanted a change from the bun I've been wearing so I clipped the top and just did a french roll with the leftover hair. The twists were added into the french roll too. This was done on blow-dried hair.

I have three brand new styles coming up this week so keep check or subscribe.

Curly Fro Tutorial - Worth a try.

I'm definitely going to do this in a few weeks or so. Look out for the style soon. It looks a lot less time consuming with the twists and not the plaits for a braid-out. It's definitely a nice weekend look if you can't do this for work during the week but want a nice funky style to last you the weekend.

Try it if you like it.

I was just trying something new. I did flat twist at the front as you can see. I added another part just for visual interest. That's the designer in me talking. :) I wasn't extremely excited about this style but...
Try it if you like it and keep it kinky.

No Heat Bhantu Knot-Out

Hot Style How-To

This is Kay Kay from Fotki. I saw her with this cute short 'do and immediately thought of all the people who have asked for short hairstyle ideas. I asked her how she did it and this is what she said:

My profile picture was taken during my transitional period. I achieved this style through a strawset, pulled the curls apart, and pushed them back with a thin head band, and stuck a pretty flower in the puff! I didn't know how detailed you wanted me to be so below is a summary of how I did my strawsets:

I co-wash, condition, detangle, while still wet/damp divide and wind sections of hair up a straw of desired size beginning in the back of the head (for hold apply a small amount of a leave in conditioner with some hold or setting power before winding section of hair on straw), and secure straw to hair with a bobby pin. Repeat until the entire head of hair is complete and let the hair dry 100%, then gently slide the straws out of the hair one by one after removing the clips and pull curls apart1-3 times to reduce risk of frizz and style as desired :)

Thanks Kaykay!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! I'm just a tourist really - not an American so I don't officially celebrate it but I hope everyone is truly giving thanks. I wish you all a blessed year with many more things to give thanks for.

A New Style

Sorry about all the wires in the pic. I was rushing out and it was day 2 of this style so I wanted to catch it before it was ruined. This style happened completely by accident. I washed and blow-dried my hair. I did two rows of twists at the back then got bored and impatient. I then did one flat twist at the front and just didn't feel like doing my hair so I plait it in four and just clipped everything up into a bun the next day. This style is the result. I'm learning not to be such a perfectionist with my hair. I'm quite tired of styling it though. SO I think the quick styles are doing it for now. When I visit JA for the holidays I'll get my hair styled a couple of times but I just don't see myself spending more than a 1/2 hour (at most) on styling for a while.

Hot Style

This style took about 5 minutes.

I did a side part and took out a bang on the larger side. I then secured the rest of my hair into a ponytail and covered it with a tam. I secured the tam with large hair pins. I then pulled the bang to the side and secured it with small hair combs on the side. I used hair pins to secure anything that is out of place.

Straight Style - Hepburn Style

Well ladies, again I'm posting a straight hair style. That is what I love about natural hair. It's so versatile.

Spanish Locks

This is my (Jamaican) High School friend Kisha. She is currently representing for the natural ladies in Spain.

Style of Choice:

Her Words:

"With Dread Locs, you don’t have to worry about your hair getting knotted all the time and detangling. I’m not fighting my hair. I’m working with it. My husband loves it! (That’s why I haven’t cut it yet.) I love dreadlocks because I can have longer hair and I feel it compliments my features better. Combing is just not for me."

A special holla to all the ladies in Spain keeping their hair kinky. An upcoming BLOG will talk about her experience with locs in her part of Spain. Until next you visit...

The Hat Comes Out

Well, sometimes it's raining and my hair is kinda damp and in odd finger-parted plaits and I don't have the energy and well... the hat happens. I kinda enjoyed it though and it compliments my glasses.
I'm sure this hat will make a few more appearances but hopefully not too many.

Super Simple Style

I parted a bang, twisted the end between my fingers and pinned it to the side. The rest of my hair was up in a pony puff. I think I'll be doing this style for a few days since I have no time to comb my hair for a while. I'll twist my hair in about 8 at night. If I do any other variations, you'll see soon.

Quick Drying Without a Blow-Dryer

I plait my hair in ten to get this style. It took almost two days to dry and I wore a hat when I had to run out of the Apt. I'm smiling in the photo but...

I tried to comb out my hair after two days of this style. It was NOT pretty. I was able to get it all done but it was just too much work so now I'm on to trying to wash and find a better way to stretch and dry my hair without the tangling. Now I'm off to Fotki and Youtube for some suggestions. I don't know why plaiting my hair seems to just get it in knots.

Hot Style

So this is about day four of my braid-out. I did a pony puff and side swept bang. Included in the bang was one single thick twist that I added for visual interest. I really enjoyed my messy puff. Who says everything has to be straight and in place all the time.

Another Twist on an Old Style

Although the hair looks quite neat in the picture, it was terribly messy so I started wearing a tam over the back to cover up the fuzz. I'm not crazy about this style though. I'm temped to buy a more modern tam but I already have too many. LOL. Keep it Kinky y'all!

(Click on the image for a larger view)

Polished Again

I did my nails. I've used this color a million times. I'm now bored of it. I've been through at least 5 bottles of this color. It also seems a little outdated but I'm trying not to spend unnecessarily so I'm using what I have.

Remember you can click on the images to enlarge.

Hot Style Variation

This is just a variation of the last Hot Style I posted. I did a bun in the back instead of the french roll.

Professional Style

Twisted bang + front flat twists + french roll in the back = Cute, Professional style.

End of Night Hair

My hair at the end of the night. It was ridiculously windy and my hair hadn't dried properly. It turned into a big ball of fuzz. I love it! I don't think i've ever worn it this big before! Many more updates to come.

Braid-Out Results

Products Used
  • Nizoral Shampoo (I have dandruff or something flaky and bad after the kanekalon braids)
  • VO5 for Conditioner washing
  • Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructor
  • Cantu Shea Butter: leave-in conditioning repair cream
  • Lottabody setting lotion

My Process:

  1. Wash hair.
  2. Towel Dry
  3. Add Cantu Shea Butter and Lottabody Setting Lotion while detangling with my Demen brush.
  4. Plait in 16-20 parts.
  5. Set plaits on purple perm rods.
  6. Dry (I air-dried after blowing over with my blow-dryer for about 5 minutes.
  7. Release and style.
What I didn't like:
  • It took wayyy too long. I didn't untangle under the shower and that my be 1/2 my problem but everything took almost 2 hrs. I'm hoping to keep the braid-out or just not wash for another 5 days at least. I won't have the time to even if I wanted to either.
  • It takes a bit too long to dry when I roller-set the plaits. Maybe I'll try again without the rollerset but I think i'll try twists next time around.
