Hot Style

Looking for a great style for a Christmas party or just everyday wear? This flat-twist-out style that Pretty Dimples did could be great.

I'm doing a test run right now with 7 flat twists. Good or bad I'll post my results tomorrow before I go to work.

Makeup Essentials

Hey Ladies. I've taken to makeup quite a bit lately. I don't wear it all the time but I've been doing some research so that I can step up my game face. Here are some essentials when it comes to makeup application.

Must-haves
1 large mirror
Liquid Foundation Sponges

Brushes
Powder brush
Eyeshadow brushes
Blush brush

Extras
Tissue to wipe away mistakes quickly
Petroleum Jelly as mascara replacement
Cotton Pads for blotting things like oil and extra product.
Makeup Remover

I've been criticized...

...a lot.

I've been criticized for blow-drying my hair. I've ebeen told I'm accepting the euro-centric norms and that I haven't accepted my natural hair texture. WHATEVER. For my critics' information - not all Caucasians have bone straight hair and even some of those that do still blow-dry and flatiron their hair. It's a styling option. The last time I plaited my hair in seven after washing and towel drying, it took TWO DAYS to dry. When I was relaxed it took a long time too. I blow-dry because it's fast. I also blow-dry my hair to dry it without tangles. The plaits tend to have tangles too even though I throroughly untangle with my denman. I think something is wrong with my plaiting method. LOL. Anyway, I mostly straighten my hair when I don't have the time to untangle my hair in order to style it everyday. Sometimes I just feel like having a different style. I love my hair... in many styles.

If you enjoy your hair curly and never straightened - good for you. If you want to wear it flat-ironed all the time - good for you (and be careful not to damage your hair). Do what works for you and I'll do what works for me. The main reason I stopped putting a permanent relaxer in my hair is that I believed the chemicals are harmful.

Unfortunately I'm not trying to make some kind of statement. I'm just doing me. I happen to like my natural texture more though and wish more people would explore the natural hair option. It can be quite difficult to transition but I definitely encourage everyone I know to try it. Anyway, until next time when I come through with new styles...

New Style

I still have two rows of twists at the back of my hair. I wanted a change from the bun I've been wearing so I clipped the top and just did a french roll with the leftover hair. The twists were added into the french roll too. This was done on blow-dried hair.

I have three brand new styles coming up this week so keep check or subscribe.

Keep it Kinky.

Curly Fro Tutorial - Worth a try.

I'm definitely going to do this in a few weeks or so. Look out for the style soon. It looks a lot less time consuming with the twists and not the plaits for a braid-out. It's definitely a nice weekend look if you can't do this for work during the week but want a nice funky style to last you the weekend.

Try it if you like it.

I was just trying something new. I did flat twist at the front as you can see. I added another part just for visual interest. That's the designer in me talking. :) I wasn't extremely excited about this style but...
Try it if you like it and keep it kinky.

Hot Style

This hot style is from from Pretty Dimples. Tip - You can use a soft gel for hold. I prefer JAM (not the fruit kind - the one for hair).

No Heat Bhantu Knot-Out

Hot Style How-To

This is Kay Kay from Fotki. I saw her with this cute short 'do and immediately thought of all the people who have asked for short hairstyle ideas. I asked her how she did it and this is what she said:

My profile picture was taken during my transitional period. I achieved this style through a strawset, pulled the curls apart, and pushed them back with a thin head band, and stuck a pretty flower in the puff! I didn't know how detailed you wanted me to be so below is a summary of how I did my strawsets:

I co-wash, condition, detangle, while still wet/damp divide and wind sections of hair up a straw of desired size beginning in the back of the head (for hold apply a small amount of a leave in conditioner with some hold or setting power before winding section of hair on straw), and secure straw to hair with a bobby pin. Repeat until the entire head of hair is complete and let the hair dry 100%, then gently slide the straws out of the hair one by one after removing the clips and pull curls apart1-3 times to reduce risk of frizz and style as desired :)

Thanks Kaykay!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! I'm just a tourist really - not an American so I don't officially celebrate it but I hope everyone is truly giving thanks. I wish you all a blessed year with many more things to give thanks for.

A New Style

Sorry about all the wires in the pic. I was rushing out and it was day 2 of this style so I wanted to catch it before it was ruined. This style happened completely by accident. I washed and blow-dried my hair. I did two rows of twists at the back then got bored and impatient. I then did one flat twist at the front and just didn't feel like doing my hair so I plait it in four and just clipped everything up into a bun the next day. This style is the result. I'm learning not to be such a perfectionist with my hair. I'm quite tired of styling it though. SO I think the quick styles are doing it for now. When I visit JA for the holidays I'll get my hair styled a couple of times but I just don't see myself spending more than a 1/2 hour (at most) on styling for a while.

Hot Style

This style took about 5 minutes.

I did a side part and took out a bang on the larger side. I then secured the rest of my hair into a ponytail and covered it with a tam. I secured the tam with large hair pins. I then pulled the bang to the side and secured it with small hair combs on the side. I used hair pins to secure anything that is out of place.

Straight Style - Hepburn Style

Well ladies, again I'm posting a straight hair style. That is what I love about natural hair. It's so versatile.

Spanish Locks

This is my (Jamaican) High School friend Kisha. She is currently representing for the natural ladies in Spain.

Style of Choice:
Loose Locs

Her Words:

"With Dread Locs, you don’t have to worry about your hair getting knotted all the time and detangling. I’m not fighting my hair. I’m working with it. My husband loves it! (That’s why I haven’t cut it yet.) I love dreadlocks because I can have longer hair and I feel it compliments my features better. Combing is just not for me."

A special holla to all the ladies in Spain keeping their hair kinky. An upcoming BLOG will talk about her experience with locs in her part of Spain. Until next you visit...

Tip - Use a little Lottabody Setting Lotion when doing your roller sets to get good hold. Perm rods are better than regular rollers for natural hair.

The Hat Comes Out

Well, sometimes it's raining and my hair is kinda damp and in odd finger-parted plaits and I don't have the energy and well... the hat happens. I kinda enjoyed it though and it compliments my glasses.
I'm sure this hat will make a few more appearances but hopefully not too many.

Black Onyz

Super Simple Style

I parted a bang, twisted the end between my fingers and pinned it to the side. The rest of my hair was up in a pony puff. I think I'll be doing this style for a few days since I have no time to comb my hair for a while. I'll twist my hair in about 8 at night. If I do any other variations, you'll see soon.

Keep It Kinky.

Quick Drying Without a Blow-Dryer

I plait my hair in ten to get this style. It took almost two days to dry and I wore a hat when I had to run out of the Apt. I'm smiling in the photo but...

I tried to comb out my hair after two days of this style. It was NOT pretty. I was able to get it all done but it was just too much work so now I'm on to trying to wash and find a better way to stretch and dry my hair without the tangling. Now I'm off to Fotki and Youtube for some suggestions. I don't know why plaiting my hair seems to just get it in knots.

Pretty Dimples is back with yet another Hot Style appearance on Keep It Kinky. She does all her styles herself. Talk about talented right? Hot Style

So this is about day four of my braid-out. I did a pony puff and side swept bang. Included in the bang was one single thick twist that I added for visual interest. I really enjoyed my messy puff. Who says everything has to be straight and in place all the time.

Another Twist on an Old Style

Although the hair looks quite neat in the picture, it was terribly messy so I started wearing a tam over the back to cover up the fuzz. I'm not crazy about this style though. I'm temped to buy a more modern tam but I already have too many. LOL. Keep it Kinky y'all!

Polished Again

I did my nails. I've used this color a million times. I'm now bored of it. I've been through at least 5 bottles of this color. It also seems a little outdated but I'm trying not to spend unnecessarily so I'm using what I have.

Remember you can click on the images to enlarge.

Hot Style Variation

This is just a variation of the last Hot Style I posted. I did a bun in the back instead of the french roll.

Professional Style

Twisted bang + front flat twists + french roll in the back = Cute, Professional style.

End of Night Hair

My hair at the end of the night. It was ridiculously windy and my hair hadn't dried properly. It turned into a big ball of fuzz. I love it! I don't think i've ever worn it this big before! Many more updates to come.

Braid-Out Results

Products Used
  • Nizoral Shampoo (I have dandruff or something flaky and bad after the kanekalon braids)
  • VO5 for Conditioner washing
  • Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructor
  • Cantu Shea Butter: leave-in conditioning repair cream
  • Lottabody setting lotion

My Process:

  1. Wash hair.
  2. Towel Dry
  3. Add Cantu Shea Butter and Lottabody Setting Lotion while detangling with my Demen brush.
  4. Plait in 16-20 parts.
  5. Set plaits on purple perm rods.
  6. Dry (I air-dried after blowing over with my blow-dryer for about 5 minutes.
  7. Release and style.
What I didn't like:
  • It took wayyy too long. I didn't untangle under the shower and that my be 1/2 my problem but everything took almost 2 hrs. I'm hoping to keep the braid-out or just not wash for another 5 days at least. I won't have the time to even if I wanted to either.
  • It takes a bit too long to dry when I roller-set the plaits. Maybe I'll try again without the rollerset but I think i'll try twists next time around.

Braid Out Video

Hi all. I'm going to celebrating my 20+th birthday today. I'll let you guess. lol. Anyway. I'm about to wash my hair and prepare for the braid-out I'd like to do today. I'm going ice-skating. LOL. Yes - a very grown-up birthday celebration. Anyway. I will post the results later today. I hope it looks good. DOn't want to celebrate my birthday with messed up hair right?

I'll do almost as many braids as Miss Curly Chronicles did in her video (below). I'm going to do the braids on wet hair and use Lottabody Setting Lotion and probably Cantu Shea Butter then let my hair air-dry. I'll post my results later today/tonight. See you soon and Keep It Kinky!

It's Growing!

So I knew my hair would grow... but not this fast. I gained about an inch of growth during my Braids Challenge. Just three months ago, this bun style would have been almost impossible... especially with a side part. So i'm just sharing a little excitement and encouragement. Your hair will grow. Just nurture is like a plant (all the right fertilizers and stuff) and you should the reap rewards in due time.

Braids Challenge Continued 20/15

Well, my edges needed to be redone and my hair needed to be washed. I threw on my tam and went on my way.

Does this qualify as a braids style to you? Oh well - I kinda just see the tam as an accessory but this is style twenty-one.

Good Product Alert

African Royale Braid & Extensions Spray
In the past I used this product when wearing braids extensions. I've been using it on my natural hair for the past few days and I am AMAZED by how soft my hair is. I think this one is a keeper. I'll be using it a lot in the future. Bonus: According to the label, it's black-owned.

Contemplating...

So for about two hours last night(it's 2:04AM) I got the strongest urge to get locs. I just had this overwhelming feeling of anxiety. My hair is itching and needs to be washed and the thought of detangling and the stress of putting my hair up in plaits and styling just made me ridiculously anxious. I love changing styles but I don't really like stying - especially box braids which take forever now that my hair is getting longer. Honestly, I'm not that good at styling (eg cornrows) either and my styles only look neat for about three days.

Anyway, I save a LOT of images of hairstyle. I mean a LOT. I take many pictures of magazines etc. There is probably an illness for this habit.

Anyway, I realized that I have over 100 style variations for loose hair. Some are updos but they can all be done in under 20 minutes. Most in as little as 10. They include braid-outs and updos done from braid-outs, blow-dried hair and simple updos done on blow-dried hair etc.

In conclusion, there is probably no way I'll get locs. I really love changing styles and my loose hair too much. I also love the versatility of loose natural hair a bit more. it's great for many people. I guess right now it's just not right for me!

You all are in for a LOT of new styles...

Flapper Style

What to Wear

Today I'm talking about button-down shirts and blue jeans . That's my favorite outfit and the white shirt is big this season. Wear a bright funky belt or a classic patent belt and colored shoes to set off your outfit. A funky bag can do the job too. No white shirt? Any colored shirt will do... even your boyfriend's. Just belt it for a modern twist.

Who's Wrong? Is Anybody?

I loved this video. I'm thinking about what she said but let's get real - white women perm their hair too. Is it a styling option or is it trying to be white? Whose standards are those white women with curly hair looking at? Why are white women tanning their skin in tanning booths and on their porches the minute it gets warm and the sun is out? A part of the reason I haven't locked my hair is that I like the option of wearing my hair in both a puff AND straightening it too. I'm fine with my skin. I like to play with different styles in my hair. I'd never perm my hair again because of the chemicals but then again - I'd dye my hair black or maybe even red again. Aren't dyes chemicals? Are ALL chemicals bad? Some of those dyes burn - you women know what I'm talking about. Is natural hair a statement or a style choice? Shout out ladies. I'd love to hear your comments.

Braids Challenge Continued 19/15

Remember my braids challenge to do 15 new styles by December? I am now at style 19!

I sectioned some hair on the side at the front. I secured the rest of the hair in a ponytail. I then kriss-crossed the hair and secured it to the ponytail.

Keep It Kinky
(These braids are actually not in anymore. I just like to mix it up a bit so some braids styles won't post for a while.)

Hot Style

It's a wee bit complicated... but not really. lol.

Here is what I did...
I finger parted my hair in two and secucred the top section with a black no-wire band. I then did a french roll around my top ponytail using the hair left over at the bottom. You can secure it with a french roll comb or pins (however you did your french rolls before). I did it on blow-dried hair and it took me about 5 minutes.

My New Glasses

This is not my usual topic. After having two pairs of glasses break on me in one week I ended up with these. I've been wearing glasses for over 20 years (and never broken a pair) so I'm convinced they just don't make them as strong/well anymore (like a lot of other things). I've NEVER done anything like this before. Pink leopard print? I was afraid they would be too over-the-top but not one of my friends even noticed! Ah well...

Still Keeping it Kinky.

Southern Tease

Hey everyone. This style is one on straightened hair but it can also be done on blow-dried hair or braids. Hope you try it if you have the hair for it.
