Hot Style - Flat Twists

You can't cornrow? So what?! Flat twists are easier to learn and can give equally fabulous styling options.

Frohawk Sophistication
Yes. Those two works can be put together. Remember ladies, it's not the style - It's how the style looks on you. This lady makes the frohawk look elegant and still edgy. The style can be reproduced by doing a twist out and simply pinning up the sides. Check out her fotki page at http://members.fotki.com/Nisus/about/

Hot Style - Jumbo Flat Twists

Hannah makes an encore on this site with a jumbo flat twist updo.

Done on a twist-out (hair that has been twisted to set and released).
I used a goody banana clip. The front of my hair didn't fit in so I plait it, tucked the end inside the top and secured it with a pin.

My twist-out.

I loved it so much I decided to post it to throw it in the mix.

This one is from June 2008. The previous one is from my first BC which was in about 2005/6. Oh I wonder where my hair would be now If I hadn't BC'ed again.

5 Things I Love About My Natural Hair

1. I can wash and go! Just a wash in the morning, a little leave in conditioner, maybe a scarf and I’m out the door!

2. I don’t have to endure scalp burns from chemical relaxers.

3. I can run out in the rain and not worry about my hair getting messed up.

4. It’s just so darn versatile. I can have straight hair one day and curly the next. There are countless styles for me to experiment with and I love change so that’s not just a good thing, it’s a GREAT thing.

5. It’s 100% ME. I think my hair is a great way of self-expression. I always say I have a schizophrenic wardrobe because I love so many varied looks. Well, my hair isn’t psycho but It can sure tell you exactly how I’m feeling on any given day.

This style that Falon created is simply gorgeous with a dash of chic.

How can you reproduce it? In her own words, "The style is super simple; all you need is a few hair pins and a comb. The sides are cornrowed, the top is a loose flat twist that's twisted in a zigzag pattern, the back is a tight flat twist that starts at the hairline a goes up to the top of the head. The ends of the braids and twists are pinned down & that's it in a nutshell!"

Have fun trying it. I surely will.

She joined fotki to keep track of her progress transitioning to natural hair but became an inspiration in her beautiful hairstyles along the way. This style can be achieved with flat twists and twists in the middle. You can get the curls by bhantu-knot setting the hair (leaving it overnight) and then releasing the knots.

I just absolutely love twist-outs. This style is very easy to do. Do flat twists in the direction you want your hair to fall. This is best done on wet hair with moisturizer and a little setting lotion if you want your twist-out to me more
defined. Now this is very important - Wait until your hair is FULLY dry.
If your hair is not fully dry it will probably frizz and you'll loose all definition. Release the twists, massage the scalp to conceal the parts and go!

My Recipe for Healthy, Long Hair

Well I’ve read that the hair on your head is supposed to grow ½ - 1 inch each month. Uhm… well… mine doesn’t. I don’t think so anyway. I’ve also heard that hair growth is inconsistent – Now that is something I believe. I think everybody is different. We have different skin color, height and hair. I doubt highly that everyone has the ability to grow waist-length or thigh-length hair but I DO believe that we can do things to help our hair reach it’s optimal length a little faster and a little healthier. How?

Protective styling! I’ve been dabbling in it for some time now and I truly believe the only reason I’m almost at arm pit length is because of protective styling. People on the Internet have been raving about the benefits of protective styling. It’s a simple concept. Keep your hair protected in a style that protects from shedding through combing and stop it from rubbing against your shoulders so that it isn’t weakened. Yeah – it’s that simple. Styles that are most protective typically involve combing your hair no more than once a week. Point is – the less combing and tearing that leads to shedding and losing length – the better. So now on to some basic popular protective styles…

1. Box Braids (both natural or with extensions)
2. Cornrows (make it fancy now)
3. Wash and Go’s (no combing so be prepared for tangling)
4. Twists
5. Cornrows and plaits combinations
6. Flat twists and plaits combinations

Styles will be popping up in our Hot Style section so stay tuned.

I really enjoyed this style. I did flat twists at the front of one side (slightly slanted) and twisted the rest.

Hot Style

I'm really enjoying styling my plaits. I see these styles on people with loced hair a lot but people with natural plaits tend not to try them. I loved it - and got a few compliments too. Hopefully I'll get better at it as time goes on. If you try it - and don't forget to send me pics! Remember - you can click on the pictures for larger, clearer images.

I'm not sure how hot this style is... But I liked it. I set my dry plaits on medium sized orange perm rods. A little pin-back clip for styling and My lose curls were ready for work. CLick on the images for larger pictures.

DIY Trimming Tips

I remember it too clearly. "Just clip the ends," I said naively. I left the hair salon quite upset that day. The lady took off about 3 inches - A trim? I think not! That my friend is a CUT. This is a very common experience with hairstylists and even more common for women with natural curly hair. The stylist seems to forget that your hair at the ends is curled up and sometimes doesn’t consider the shrinkage factor, cutting off much more than intended. If you hair is very damaged at the ends, you may need to go to a salon but if you only have a few knots at the end you can easily take care of this yourself. What can you do about this problem – D.I.Y. Yes – you can Do It Yourself. It is really easy. Just try a little…

DUSTING
(Tools: A sharp scissor used for hair only and a comb)
Dusting is by far the easiest and fastest way to trim your hair and is ideal for women who want to retain length. It’s called dusting because you take off just a little bit of the ends of the hair and are left with just a little (fine dust) that was taken off. Dusting is easiest done when hair is in plaits or twists. You can also do this with loose hair takin one section at a time.

Thoroughly detangle your hair. Strings that are left hanging or those fine harsh bulbs on the ends of your hair need to go. Carefully cut them off at an angle... just a little now. You don’t want it to be a blunt cut because it will be harder for the ends of your twists or plaits to stay in and not unlosen if the hair is too even.

BLOW-DRY & CUT
This may be for the braver ones of you who need a good cut. This method is not recommended for people who have very damaged/dry hair.

First gently/lightly blow-dry or flat-iron your hair because natural hair is be easier to manage in a semi-straightened state. I part my hair in four sections and then take away smaller sections and simply cut off the bad ends. Be careful not to do one side shorter than the other… This is also a little tricky. AS mentioned above, you don’t want your hair to be too even or blunt because then your plaits will start to unlosen.

Good Luck!

I decided to try curling my plaits wet. While damp I added raw coconut oil and Lottabody setting lotion. The result - more defined curls. I used smaller perm rods for this one - the purple ones. Sorry I don't have pics of the rods but they are the same as the ones in Hot Style 11 - just purple.

A Message From The Natural Jeanie

My name is Jean Lozada and I am the President of All Natural Jeanie. Our natural skincare line does not contain parabens or harsh chemicals. Our products are loaded with natural oils, exotic butters like shea and mango and skin loving botanicals and extracts.

I have a passion for lotions, potions and all things that smell pretty. I also have very sensitive skin. Mass produced bath & body products traditionally contain harsh chemicals and fillers and I found that I was having allergic reactions to a lot of what was out on the market. I had two choices. I could either give up my beloved lotions or seek a more natural alternative. I chose the latter of the two and out of this, a company was created.

All Natural has been a labor of love with a culmination of over 10 years of research, testing and product development. I am very proud of the line that we have produced and look forward to seeing what the future holds for the company.

Peace & Blessings,

Jeanie

The good ol' afro puff. I made it easier by using a stocking foot to keep everything in place. Don't like the stocking foot exposed? Just use your choice of a scarf or headband to cover it up... and yes - I was on the phone while taking this picture. I'm addicted I tell you.
