Braids Styles Challenge 8/15

Again, my aim is to do 15 styles by December 08 and this is style number 8. Of course, it's very simple.

To achieve this style clipped my hair in two. I plaited the top ponytail and secured it along with the bottom section to create another ponytail. This style was quite chic and still professional for work. I liked it mostly because it kept the hair off my face. Try it if you like it and...

So Simple Style

It's almost too simple to be called a style but the right outfit and accessories can make a single plaited ponytail simply chic. Check out more of Jenteel's photos here.

Braid Styles Challenge 7/15

My aim is to do 15 styles by December 08 and this is style number 7. It's very simple but fun.
I'm having a little fun with the braids. They are finally loosening up but some parts are still a little too tight. I just washed my hair to help the roots loosen up. I was feeling a little idle and decided to use my stocking leg headband to do a cut little headband complete with bow. I tucked the ends under the band so they wouldn't show. I was surprised that I kinda liked it - fun.

Hey Kinky Supporters
I got a request to show more nice styles for kids. I found this great video on youtube. This is for you Shawnda. Enjoy!

It's Fall & Raining Feathers

It's the first day of Fall and this is the time of year most people start looking a burnt orange top to replace that bright pink tank top. Soon the leaves will force us to accept that summer is done and Fall is here. I too like to change some things during the Fall but this time I'm thinking more about hair accessories than clothes. Feathers are hot this Fall. They floated down many runways as hair accessories this year and they are more accessible now than ever before. Try stores like Forever21 and Claires to get Feather adorned headbands and hair clips and try out a new style for Fall '08.

More Hot Hair from Essey06

We've seen this style many times and Essey06 of Fotki it wearing it well. Hair color can easily transform a look from bland to spicy. Just remember ladies, it's important to condition your hair weekly when it is chemically treated. See more pics from Essey06 here and always remember to...

Growing on Me

Well people, what can I say? They're growing on me. Perhaps it's because I hadn't seen extensions on my head in so long. I still prefer the lighter, more natural feel but now that they aren't so tight, It's not too bad. I call them my Brandy Braids because they remind me of the plaits that Brandy Norwood wore when she was on Moesha. Stay tuned for the many styles I plan to try once the roots loosen up a bit. I may also do some growth shots to show how much my hair grows over the next few months while these braids are in.

Hot Style

I'm not sure you all can see these pics clearly. I bought a hair net and made the simplest style. I clip my hair up in one then tie the hair net over my puff. It's so chic. I love it and hope you try it.

Keep It Kinky!

Just a lil' music for you.

I just wish one of these ladies in the video were sporting their own natural hair but hey - I'm sporting braids extensions so who am I to talk? lol. Enjoy!

Hot Hair

Essey06 makes her first appearance on the Kinky BLOG in pure beautiful style. A simple braid-out with a pinned up side makes for a ultra trendy look. Top off your version of this style with your favorite accessory to add even more personality to your look. Check out more of this fabulous kinky-haired lady here.

Braids Styling Series Resumes (6)

I'm not sure if you remember the braids styling photo series I began last month. My aim is to do 15 styles by December 08 and this is style number 6. It's very simple but neat. Ignore the angry face and crooked glasses. lol. If you read my previous post you'd understand the face.

Well here is the first style I could do with these braids.

Bad Braids

See these braids? Huh? See 'em?

THEY HURT!

And this is why I don't like going to salons. My hair was supposed to be in individual plaits just one inch below shoulder length. Also... and some say I'm wrong... but she used way too much hair. I feel like I have a neatly placed mop on my head. My hair is so tight and (despite my complaints) they are still drawing my scalp together. You can see it close up . I prefer natural looking extensions. I can't even wrap a new black goody band around my hair twice when it's in one. *sigh* Gentle people, these cost too much for me to be this upset.

Regrets never help much though, so this is just my way of venting and hopefully not bringing it up again. From here on I will continue my braids styling challenge to do 15 styles by December. Hopefully the low-maintenance will give me a good protective style and I'll have record growth by November/December. I'll do my hair in extensions again in January when I visit Jamaica and I KNOW I'll be satisfied with the result there.

Style Alert

Mika does yet another cute style. Flat-twists on one side. Twists on the other. Twists at the back and a bun in the middle make for a unique style. Check out one of her sites here.

Denman Brush / Detangling Tutorial

I love the denman brush. Jenni did a video here to show how she detangles using the brush. I find it much easier to detangle with this brush than with a wide tooth comb. I just ordered a D41 Denman brush so that I can stop using the comb all together. I already have a D3 that I use to get my hair combed out thoroughly. Jenni does a great job of showing how to use this brush effectively to get minimal shedding/breakage. I hope you enjoy her video.

Good Scarf Day

© hubertnealjr / thevisualpoetssociety.com

This is what I call a "good scarf day". Sometimes we think of scarves as last minute alternatives when we can't get our hair to do what you want. Check out more of Jenteel's photos here.

Let Children be Children

I'm sure you've seen them. From behind they look like little women. I've seen a few with with straightened hair and sewn in extensions and tube tops to match the one and a half inch heel.

I like when children look like children. Don't let them grow up too soon parents. Let them enjoy the simple pleasures of not having to have their hair scalp itch due to sew-ins and not spending a lot of time or money on their hair. Just let them be children.

A note from the Kinky Lady.

With a Scarf

Hi Ladies. This is the same style that you saw two posts ago but with a scarf. I love accessories. I believe they can really change the look of a style. I think this pic proves it. I wore the style in the previous post with a bandoo/headband for work. I think it had a very professional feel. This however was my style for going to the grocery store. I think the scarf gave me a very casual look. I love to be relaxed on the weekends. I look pretty relaxed right?

A Short 'do with Style

Nafkiki from Ghana had her big chop on July 31, 2008. She used a very simple hair accessory to add flavor to her short 'do. Check out her Fotki hair album here.

Chiney Bump Curls

Hey Everyone.

Chinese Bump Curls, also known as Bhantu knots are great for setting styling. I believe the bumps in this video are done on locked hair but it can be done on any hair - lose or in plaits. I really encourage everybody to try this method of curling hair. I tend to set my hair on perm rods but guess what - chiney bumps are CHEAPER. They cost nothing. Now doesn't that beat going out and buying a curlers. I say try curling your hair using the bhantu settining/chiney bump setting method before spending a single dime on rollers of any kind.

Side Twists

Plaits and locs can easily be styles. I liked this style by this Fotki Lady. She simply flat-twisted one side and left the rest out which could be curled or uncurled. Hope you try it it you're wearing box braids or locs, but whatever you do...

Akua Angel

Natural styling at it's best - "Akua Angel's line is an urban mix of her Jamaican heritage. From Kingston to California via Paris, Akua Angel's blend of colors & trendy cuts give her style a unique mix. The whole family will find outfits for a summer ride along the coast, a get together in the yard, or a midnight party on the rooftop."

As a "Jamaican to de bone" and a lover of unique fashion, I was please to learn about Akua Angel on the YMIB website. Check out the Akua Angel site here.

Now you know I couldn't end this post without talking about that model's hair. Is it fabulous or what?! Now I could never lock my hair. I'm way to obsessed with change but I dream of the day that I can Wear my hair like that with beautiful, long, natural plaits. Maybe in another three or four years? Time will tell. Until next time...

Perfect Fit

What is natural hair? Do you know?

I thought about that question. I write about natural hair quite often so I figure I should have a definition for it. Caucasian people could have natural hair too right? It grew on their heads naturally. I'm laughing hysterically now but never mind me. I crack me up with my own corny jokes all the time but I'm sure you get the point. I decided to look it up on "the great" Wikipedia. See what I found here.

New Style

I don't know why I've never thought of this. I found my good ol' Goody Banana Clip recently. I've never really though of using it much While my hair is in plaits of twists. To create this style, I clipped the front of my hair using a hair band and the clipped the rest up in the banana clip. SUper quick and really easy. Don't think that you can't use some of your old favorite clips because you don't have straightened hair. Try it.

In VO5 Heaven - 77 cents

I'm all about conditioner washing. I rarely use shampoo now that I rinse or conditioner-wash my natural hair every few days. I found some great-smelling cheapies that have made that ritual a less stressing on my pocket.

I decided to visit the website to see what was up with the VO5 people. They have a black model on there. Check here out here. I was pleasantly surprised. We (natural haired ladies) still are not represented by every brand out there as much as I'd like. Regardless, I really appreciate seeing the curly haired model on the site.

I get my VO5 conditioner at CVS Pharmacy. (I should have them pay me for free advertising.) Last week they were going for just 77 cents! It's usually 99 cents. I highly recommend this for frequent conditioner washes. I still follow up with a teeny bit of Aphogee. What can I say... I'm in love with that ridiculously expensive product.

Cora Daniels, Author

Let me be painfully honest. I only read about her because of her hair. Yes, my obsession with hair is causing me to click on almost any article online with a picture of a natural model (Cora is not a model. She's a writer). I'm not purely hair driven however. The title of her book also caught me. I'm sure you'd be caught by the name Ghettonation too.
See the article I found here.

Ghettonation Video

Cora Daniels, Author of Ghettonation did a talk on her book. I'm very excited about reading this book soon. I ordered it from the library so It' just a matter of finding the time. I will post a mini book review once I'm done.

See her talk here.

Introducing Dede Sutton

She's doing her thing and doing it well... and I mean really well. She is an inspiration to all black entrepreneurs in online businesses. I found great advice on everything from business to beauty in a recent article that was written. Here is one thing she had to say...

"Dede: I feel that African American/Black women are going through a natural and self-acceptance revolution. We no longer care what others think of us and we do what makes us happy. We know we don't have to conform to a certain standard of beauty and I think that's beautiful. Is there anything I would change...I would say to stop tearing each other" down. Let's reverse it and help build each other up.

Polished For Fall

Sadly, I had't been taking care of my nails lately but I'm back on track. My first move was to see what fabulous new colors are in for Fall. These colors were amongst my favorites. I think rich reds and pinks are great, providing a variety of looks from cutesy to HOTTT.

Check out how these colors look in THIS post I found on a beauty BLOG.

Hot Style

Her hair is always fabulous. She used satin foam rollers to create the curls and added some braids and rolls on the sides. Her result - a fabulous curl-hawk! I can't wait to try it. It may be a month or two until I do this since my hair is in plaits now but I'll post a pic as soon as I do this style. Remember to send me photos of the styles you've tried and I'm always welcoming comments.

I'm 4a/4b - What's Yours (hair types)

Hey Ladies.
I'm no expert by any means but I've had a lot of people ask me what I think their hair type is. I don't really think it's all that important but It's probably good to know.

Here's an article to help.
